[K-POP COSTUME REVIEW] Super Junior Sexy, Free and Single

Ok so I wrote loads of really clever stuff and now all the intelligent anecdotes about the massive phallic tower in the first scene (above) have gone from my head!

So, this is SM and it’s SJ so there’s rooms in which they dance in formation and wearing synchronised outfits, and there’s also some individual shots. OK.

So the first scene, imma call this the Industrial Room because of the streetlamps and lines on the floor, sees them wearing thrown together, indie jumble sale type outfits, I actually thought Eunhyuk was Henry and was like WOW OMG LAU IS IN SJ! (alas, it will never happen because the world is full of horrible racist ignorant fools)

Fashionable and casual.
--this part is ok---
OK it’s the individual shots that were scary. More on that later.

The next room is called the Plain Room because it’s just a box wot they’re dancing in…They’re sporting a bit of a bad boy/ leather n rock image, very SM. This is all fine, nothing is making me spazz cos it’s so beautiful but nothing is making me cringe either (tbh, I do have to say that none of SJ’s concepts have been my ‘favourite’ in the history of K-POP…I LOVE SJ and the MV’s are always OK but in terms of concept and costume they’re always kind of meh for me…(like, in comparison to SHINee or f(x)))

But Donghae, please zip up a bit more! *awkward*

So, the individual shots…Sungmin, Ryeowook, Eunhyuk, and even Kyuhyun looks good (I didn’t like the collar at first but it’s grown on me) We don’t see much of the other members but Shindong, Kangin, Yesung and Donghae have limited individual member shots, or maybe I just remember the others more. Sungmin and Ryeowook both looks FAAAbulous in their ind. shots.
bUT

So… next is the Triangle Room, my favourite scene. There’s lots of things going on the background but not too much so that we’re not focused on the members. The light falling on the floors adds a nice dynamic to the scene and the outfits are all dominated by white but, like I said before, they don’t blend into the background, there’s enough grey and black as well as texture brought into the scene. Very interesting and well done and shows SM moving forward with style choices yet keeping the SJ flair we all know and love.

…sorry but i feel like i need to say KANGIN
KANGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNN

OPPPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA T.T

...and then

And let me just say; Jesus doesn’t approve, Siwon.
LITERALLY WTF.

Then we get some fresh n breezy walking shots of the members all looking propa dappa in black suits. (apart from Yesung cos clearly SM likes to irritate me with sleeveless) The suits are a nice touch, they reaffirm Super Junior’s position as a mature, successful band, it’s like after all the dress up we’re reminded that they’re professional artists, after all (apart from Yesung who’s being sent back to the 90’s).

Oh, and remember those gorgeous teaser photos that had everyone spazzing cos they were so beautiful…? Yeah, they have nothing to do with the MV.

Thanks SM!

Overall, I’m a pleased E.L.F, the MV really grew on me after watching it a few times but since it’s SJ you know it’s gonna be similar to everything they’ve done before, and that’s fine.

But SM, the really strange style choices have to go. If the whole video was done in that style, wearing very little, then maybe it would look OK but it’s not and seeing as recently Super Junior’s views on Youtube have been going up up up (the teaser got 2 mil ffs!) and there is a lot more attention from the west directed towards K-POP and what it’s producing, you’d think they’d be a bit more concious of this because frankly, a lot of western people (esp young men) will just call this ‘gay’ (in that very special, informed and well researched way young men have of passing judgement) and seeing Leeteuk’s and Siwon’s body’s (beautiful as they may be) may make people uncomfortable and reluctant to get into a group like this. I know I’m always banging on about it but in terms of international appeal a group like B.A.P in which the leader is attractive and charismatic but wearing clothes makes everyone comfortable, guys will feel comfortable because they conform to the ideals of masculinity over here, girls will feel comfortable because IT’S B.A.P.

As much as I like seeing people naked I don’t want that to become the music. there’s a time and place for everything, this video hasn’t got any other bits of sexy, there’s no suggestive dancing, no bed, no ladies…
I like the song and the MV and LOVE some of the outfits.

3/5 for costume.

And I know there will be those who will defend SM, saying the members look gorgeous no matter what but at the end of the day they employ someone to artistically design everything about this music video and along the line someone has said ‘let’s grease up these idols and alienate them from the rest of the world’
