[K-POP COSTUME REVIEW] BLAST FROM THE K-POP PAST; SHINee - 누난 너무 예뻐 (Replay)

SHINee - 누난 너무 예뻐 (Replay) Costume Review

Takin it back old school (not that old)

»»I’m afraid the pics ain’t gonna be high quality or nuthink on this because the official MV on SM’s channel is crappy quality and I can’t find any better anywhere else.««

Everybody remembers this, right? ;)

Ok so this is possibly the first song I listened to by SHINee and is definitely the first MV I watched by them. My first thoughts were that they looked really young, really Asian and really fashionable (in my eyes…), which are all accurate and fair points tbh.

So they follow the tried and tested music video formula of a few ‘sets’ of outfits for the group. This is one set in a…room…with red being the link between the members. They’ve dressed Onew as a child rapper from the 90’s and Jonghyun as a gay cowboy…and mushroom hair Taemin…………..

Already in this video they set themselves up as a ‘dance’ group and make it clear that they are very very good at it (dancing that is)…and stalking a girl who’s clearly uninterested. They're very good at this

At the time I was really (really) into J-POP and didn’t have a grasp of the Korean language at all, so I didn’t really understand the ‘older sister you’re so pretty’ translations that were everywhere… I was like o,O Korea?

But yeah, the fact that they were young boys, singing to older women affected how I saw them as a band, it’s weird sometimes to see them now and how far they’ve come. Even just little details like they’re not wearing any makeup, whether artistically or to enhance the features, if they are wearing makeup it’s very concealed (ahahaha cwidt) and they all have virgin, Asian hair.

Yup, that’s SHINee and that really happened.

The other significant group outfits is on the roof dancing scene, they wear these outfits while their stalking seducing Victoria as well and Taemin wears a Star Wars t-shirt. This whole style was just kinda casual and breezy and cool…at the time. :P

The aim of this concept was to set up SHINee as a cool, young, hip, fashionable idol band with pretty people in and it did just that. (we know the truth though right-there is no way they are cool, hip and fashionable)

This red themed outfit set is contrasted in the second half of the MV with a blue themed outfit set, this one’s outdoors…at night…ooooh

The thing we have to remember is that this wasn’t created with the international audience in mind, K-POP has in the last few years had quite a bit of press from all over but only over the last few years have companies been thinking about the international audience, whether it’s the concept in general or an English translation to the description box, at the time there was nothing. and the videos were uploaded in 480p at best! As an English fan I relied wholeheartedly on the sharing communities of J-POP and K-POP (mostly through Livejournal and Vox).
I’ve never been Taemin biased at any point (per se, I have had my ‘moments’), I love him a lot but I’ve never felt comfortable with him being an ‘innocent youth’ and me being a pedonoona, even at the time it wasn’t his age that bothered me but the weird crazy pedonoona fans. I always felt like SM pushed this image and it kinda made me uncomfortable, BUT I loved this outfit he wore;

If this was reincarnated now the members would have distinctive features and characters (e.g. the feisty blonde one, the sexy redhead, the brunette with pointy eyeliner), this is partly just the way that K-POP has gone through time and partly because it means we get to know each character very quickly, by looking at them.

The costumes aren’t BAD, they’re just not as thought out as later MV’s by SHINee. The idea of comeback ‘concepts’ wasn’t as strong as it is now. :)

2/5 for costume

100000000000000000/5 for song and SHINee!!!

Hope you enjoyed the trip down memory lane! :)

Peace
